Liu, Teng, et al. Teleconnections among Tipping Elements in the Earth System.. arXiv:2209.04327. Thirteen senior scientists based in China, Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Israel including Hans Schullnhuber, Jurgen Kurths and Shlomo Havlin proceed to view dynamic world weather as a complex adaptive system which is capable of large, sudden changes due to small perturbations. As the second quote cites, a further inclusion of endemic network qualities (see Global Climate Change) is found to provide vital topological forms. Unrestrained anthropogenic forcing is then seen as a primary factor. As the abstract notes, actual proof is gained from studies of major environmental areas, along with coral reefs, Greenland ice, Boreal forests and more. As depicted on a continental map, a sense of a whole Earth, ecosphere unity becomes evident.

It is now known that local and global climates can reach tipping points and shift abruptly from one state to another. Yet, it remains how to assess and quantify such events and the teleconnections between them. To fill this need, we employ a network approach so to analyze prominent occasions such as the Amazon Rainforest. Tibetan Plateau and West Antarctic ice sheet. We can then identify common propagation paths between them along with early warning signals for critical transitions. Our framework provides new insights into how tipping elements are linked to each other and into the potential predictability of cascading dynamics. (Abstract excerpts, edits)

Networks have proven to be a versatile way to explore the properties of complex systems in many physical, biological, ecological and social sciences. Their application to the complex climate system led to the idea of climate networks (CN) in which geographical locations on a longitude-latitude grid become network nodes, while the degree of similarity, or ‘connectedness’. The climate-network framework has been used model phenomena such extreme rainfall, India monsoons, Atlantic meridional circulation, Atlantic multidecadal scillation and others. The power of CNs lies in its ability to map topological features and patterns related to the physics of the dynamical climate variability. (4)

Fountain, Henry. Failure to Slow Warming Will Set Off Climate “Tipping Points,” Scientists Say. New York Times. Sept. 8, 2022. A review of a major, concurrent article Exceeding 1.5 C Global Warming could Trigger Multiple Climate Tipping Points by Davie Armstrong McKay, David, et al in the journal Science (377/I. 6611, 2022), see editorial note below. See also in the Times (Sept. 7), Pakistan’s Vulnerability to Disaster by David Wallace-Wells which makes the case that the epic calamity whence this non-polluting country is now one-third underwater is not its own fault, but needs be seen as due to and solved by a worldwide, systematic entire Earth effort. (We have recently propose a new Earthropocene Era which would thus consider the whole bioworld as a cellular ecosphere organism.

Climate tipping points are conditions beyond which changes in a part of the climate system become self-perpetuating. These changes may lead to abrupt, irreversible, and dangerous impacts with serious implications for humanity. Armstrong McKay et al. present an updated assessment of the most important climate tipping elements and their potential tipping points, including their temperature thresholds, time scales, and impacts. Their analysis indicates that even global warming of 1°C, a threshold that we already have passed, puts us at risk by triggering some tipping points. This finding provides a compelling reason to limit additional warming as much as possible. (Editorial note)

Kemp, Luke, et al. Climate Endgame: Exploiting Catastrophic Climate Change Scenarios. PNAS. 119/34, 2022. Eleven senior authorities from the UK, China, Germany, the USA, the Netherlands and Australia, such as Johan Rockstrom, Tim Lenton, Marten Scheffer, Hans Schellnhuber and Will Steffen, post a thoroughly researched, deeply insightful, and globally graphic alarm to date. While the USA just passed a major climate bill by a 51 to 50 vote, in late August this critical life support (kinder or cinder) peril competes with barbaric warlords, political egos, polar gridlock, nuclear superpowers, economic chaos, the litany goes on. Yet women, the visionary, life affirming, half of the universe (warriors and worriers) are brutalized by male governments. Our resource website ever tries to gather, document and offer practical resolutions such as (ubuntu) ecovillages.

Prudent risk management requires inclusion of bad-to-worst-case scenarios. Yet, for climate change, such perils are poorly understood. Could anthropogenic climate change result in worldwide societal collapse or even human extinction? If these issues can be cogently identified, an awareness could galvanize action, improve resilience, and inform emergency responses. Our agenda covers four main aspects: 1) Can climate extremes drive mass extinction events? 2) Could a further consequence be human mass mortality and morbidity? 3) How vulnerable are human societies' to risk cascades, such as conflict, political instability, and financial collapse, 4) How can these many global dangers be phrased as “integrated catastrophe assessment” response? Maniscalco, Sabrina, et al. Quantum Network Medicine. arXiv:2206.12405. With a Rethinking Medicine with Network Science and Quantum Algorithms subtitle, seventeen University of Helsinki, Finnish Quantum Institute physicists, provide a thorough study of how these universe to human, original and manifest realms, could inform and integrate so as to form a palliative synthesis. See also Translational Quantum Machine Intelligence for Tumor Dynamics in Oncology at (2202.10919). A planatural philoSophia might trace an overall evolution whence an accumulated medical/health corpus is meant to be fed back to the fraught beings from whom it arose. Thus a self-cocreative genesis which heals, medicates, cures itself comes into view.

The emerging field of network medicine views ways to investigate disease pathogenesis, integrating information from relevant Omics databases, including protein-protein interaction, correlation-based, gene regulatory, and Bayesian networks. However, this requires analysing large amounts of data with an urgent need for powerful computation methods. At the microscopic level, drug-target chemistry simulation becomes a quantum problem, which needs a quantum solution. As we will discuss, quantum computing may be a key ingredient in enabling the full potential of network medicine. We propose to combine network medicine and quantum algorithms in a novel research field for a new era of disease prevention and drug design. (Excerpt)

Kothari, Ashish. A Tapestry of Alternatives. Scientific American. July, 2022. We record and extol this illustrated article by the East Indian environmentalist, author, and activist for its survey of viable “indigenous” animate ways (once again) to abide in sustainable communities within their natural bioregions, and as a way cite similar endeavors and writings, much across the global South. (And it would do us well if “American” could phase into a unified Earthican alive.)

We note Escobar, Arturo. Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Independence, Autonomy and the Making of Worlds by Arturo Escobar (search) (Duke UP, 2020). See also his prior works: Pluriversal Politics: The Real and the Possible (2020), and Constructing the Pluriverse: The Geopolitics of Knowledge (2018). Pluriverse: A Post-Development Dictionary by A. Kothari, et al, eds. (Columbia UP, 2019) provides a deep, fertile rooting.

Moving beyond critiques of colonialism, new perspectives are offered on development, democracy, and ideology guided by non-Western thought and practice that range from feminist approaches to scientific research to ways of knowing expressed through West African oral traditions. In Designs for the Pluriverse Arturo Escobar presents a new vision of design theory and practice aimed at channeling its world-making capacity toward ways of being and doing that are deeply attuned to justice and the Earth. Noting that most design—currently serves capitalist ends, Escobar argues for an “autonomous design” that eschews commercial and modernizing aims in favor of collaborative and placed-based approaches. Such an approach attends to environmental, personal, and political issues by a unique focus on the radical interdependence of all beings.

Pluriverse: A Post-Development Dictionary contains over one hundred essays on transformative initiatives and alternatives to the currently dominant processes of globalized development, including its structural roots in modernity, capitalism, state domination, and masculinist values. It offers critical essays on mainstream solutions that ‘greenwash’ development and presents radically different worldviews and practices from around the world that point to an ecologically wise and socially just world.

Sole, Ricard and Simon Levin. Ecological Complexity and the Biosphere: The Next 30 Years. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. July, 2022. In a special issue with this title, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona and Princeton University senior scholars introduce and survey this perilous challenge that we Earthlings must face over these decades. But as we have just seen with the US climate act, whether the biosphere can be saved and sustained, or not (kinder or cinder), can be addressed by a common initiative and a strenuous, concerted effort to make this really happen. From the author’s experience, 21st century nonlinear science such as complex adaptive systems, network topologies, resilience theories which is now known to underlie natural phenomena need be fully implemented to inform and advance this global (Earthropocene) project.

Global warming, habitat loss and overexploitation of limited resources are leading to alarming declines in biodiversity. Ecosystems are complex adaptive systems (search SL) with multiple alternative states and can abruptly shift from one to another. In dealing with a biosphere where humans are part of a complex, endangered ecological network, novel theoretical and engineering approaches are vitally needed. Using a 30-year window, we explore ways to sense, preserve and restore ecosystem resilience as well as interventions from afforestation to bioengineering to mitigate ecosystem collapse. (Excerpt)
